Craine Painting

Splashing Color on a Furniture Centerpiece

A colorful palette brightened this craft room.

This homeowner wanted to change the color scheme in her children’s craft room. Her focus was on updating the look of the built-in hutch that was a centerpiece of the room. When Craine Painting owner Michael Craine came on the job, he found the hutch in rough shape. Running his hand over the surface revealed that the hutch had had multiple coats of poly slapped and dripped over it. It felt like 60 grit sandpaper, Craine found.

In addition to looking dated, this hutch felt rough from earlier repaints.

The painters began with the walls and ceiling. The walls were updated from grey to a warmer honey color, while the ceiling went from the standard extra white to Sherwin-Williams’ Captivating Cream. With the backdrop prepped, the team went to work on the hutch. They first masked and then sanded all of the oak hutch’s surfaces with Festool sanders.

A custom spray booth helped this hutch gain a smooth spray finish.

Next, the painters assembled a temporary spray booth and use an HVLP sprayer to apply Sherwin-Williams’ Aquitaine in waterborne lacquer. The result was a stunning color change that gave the room’s centerpiece the feel as well as the look of a piece of fine furniture. As neutrals have been trending for the past few years, the Craine team found it an absolute pleasure to work with this out-of-the-box color palette.
