Transforming a Dark Kitchen with Light Cabinetry

This homeowner wanted to make a major transformation in the kitchen, and knew that refinishing the kitchen cabinets would make a significant impact. The homeowners and their designer reached out to Patton Painting Inc., a contractor with which they’d worked in the past, to help in brightening their kitchen.

Covering the original dark cherry cabinetry in crisp white took two weeks of work.

Although the kitchen was built within the last 15 years, the dark cherry color of the existing high-end cabinetry was a stark difference from the homeowner’s preferred style. The initial request was for cabinetry that reflected a country farmhouse style and, as a result, the Patton painters initially completed several samples exploring a range of antique glazes. After creating samples with different glazes as well as solid samples, the homeowner settled on a solid repaint with no glazing.

After numerous samples featuring an antique glaze, the homeowner settled on this crisp all white color to brighten the kitchen.

Covering the dark cherry required strong attention to detail, notes Katy Wagner, the estimator on the project. “When we refinish cabinets our focus is on being meticulous, because you get one shot at doing it right. Being thorough in our process ensures we get the proper adhesion and coverage,” she says. “It was a dark colored wood that we were covering, so that emphasis on our process was important to get as close to a factory finish look as possible, which is what the customer wanted.”

Getting accurate and consistent coverage was crucial in obtaining the factory-like finish the homeowners desired for their updated kitchen.

Over a two week period, the painters moved doors and drawer fronts to their office where they were prepped and sprayed in the shop spray booth then cured over a two week period. All of the boxes, face frames and cabinets were refinished on site by hand. Although the company does lots of cabinet refinishing throughout the year, Wagner notes, this was one of their larger jobs in terms of sheer quantity of doors.

By the time the final product was reinstalled on site, the transformation was dramatic. The bright cabinets stood out among new countertops, appliances and other finishes. Better yet, this homeowner is continuing this ongoing relationship with Patton Painting, as the painters are returning this spring to refinish the exterior of the house. And through the topnotch service they’ve provided, they’ve gained a new relationship with the designer, who has already referred their services to new clients. “A high volume of our work comes from repeat customers and their enthusiastic referrals, and this project is a great example of that,” Wagner says.
