Painting ECU’s New Student Union
The 220,000-square-foot building houses a range of services, with their own unique paints and wallcoverings. |
The new East Carolina University Student Union student center was a massive undertaking. The $122 million center brings 220,000 square feet of restaurants, retail space and ballrooms to the campus, where it serves as the new ECU front door. With dynamic rooms and a plethora of different stores in the student center, this project included a multitude of interior paints and wallcoverings.
Of course, a job this big was hardly short on challenges. Throughout the project, the National Coatings team was challenged to maintain a proper workflow and schedule for the production work, due to the compressed schedule and requirements of the GC.
The new student union center was the N.C. university’s largest construction project since 2001. |
Because they had to work with a compressed schedule, the crew leader opted to increase manpower. When the quality of their work started to suffer, they would change out manpower to get a set of fresh hands on deck and ensure that finishes were first-rate. The company also enforced a management change on the project, which in turn greatly helped in the finishing and the follow-up of the project.

ECU's bold purple and gold are now featured throughout the center. |
