Restoring a Chicago Landmark

The team used Benjamin Moore Aura for red details to ensure excellent hide.

Schmidt & Co. Painting was tasked with restoring this 1881 Chicago landmark to its former beauty and the owner’s vision. But meeting that vision wasn’t easy. In fact, finding the right colors and communicating color placement to the client proved to be the contractor’s biggest challenge. It took multiple color samples, aid from a color consultant, and plain trial and error to nail down the right colors and exact placement for each color.

The house had been fully stripped down to bare wood by the homeowner 25 years ago, giving the crew a fairly good substrate with which to work. The crew fully scraped all surfaces of any peeling paint, then sanded and caulked where necessary. After priming, the master craftsmen took over to meet the job’s other biggest challenge: making the cut lines look straight. Because the historic home was sided in original hand-hewn wood, nothing was straight. Instead, all the cut lines had to be adjusted so that they would look straight to passersby. Only the most experienced painters on the crew did the final detail work.

It took time and careful consideration to decide on color placement.
The crew’s most experienced painters handled the detailed finishing work.

The painters applied two coats of Benjamin Moore paints. The result was a landmark that brought history back to vibrant life.
