Cleaning Up Kamm's Corner

The team sanded the stains on the hardwood floor, and then stained and sealed it against future damage.

Located on the west side of Cleveland in a neighborhood called Kamm’s Corner is an unassuming 2,500-square-foot rental home built in 1929. The current owner had purchased the house in the early ’90s but began renting it out in 1999. Snyder Bros. Painting had painted the exterior in 2016, so the company was invited back to renovate the interior in 2018 after tenants changed.

The five-person crew had their work cut out for them.

The tenant had left the space in bad condition, complete with pet stains on the hardwood floors, the lingering smell of cigarettes, and two 40-yard dumpsters’ worth of personal belongings left behind. The crew was given a strict three-week deadline to transform the home—following an intense cleanup.

Extreme prep work: the crew had to take out the trash to even get to the project.

Rough, damaged walls required a full day of skim coating.

The scope covered painting all the walls, ceilings, trim, doors, kitchen cabinets and basement walls, as well as refinishing the hardwood floors throughout the first floor and remodeling the main bathroom. After cleaning, the crew oil primed all the walls, ceilings, trim, doors and kitchen cabinets. Next, they sprayed a finish coat of Sherwin-Williams Builders Solution interior latex paint on the ceilings and Emerald Urethane to all the trim, doors and kitchen cabinets.

The team updated a worn deck for a new tenant.

The walls had extensive damage. It took a full day of skim coating to give the walls a smooth finish. The damage to the floors required heavy sanding, which removed the majority of imperfections and stains. Once the floors were clean, the team applied a Jacobean stain followed by three coats of polyurethane. They also scraped loose paint from the basement block walls as prep for Loxon XP. The finishing touch was the installation of a new shower surround and vanity and two finish coats upon the walls.
