Lead-safe repaint of damaged exterior

Prep and cleaning was a challenge.

Many painting companies say they’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done. Brothers Painting of Oshkosh, Wisconsin is about that life, as this historic home project fought them every step of the way.

There was a lot of “history” to deal with, so the first step was some intense cleaning, then wood and window repairs. “At the start, we felt our biggest challenge would be vine removal and getting the top half of the house even remotely clean for our finishes to stick,” said (We need a source for quotes.). “We had it washed twice, we did it once ourselves had it washed by a friend who runs a business called Josh Does It All.”

After all that, it was time to scrape the house, but … it wasn’t. The paint wasn’t chipping off, it was coming off as dust, and the age of the house meant that there was very likely lead paint involved. Without RRP certification, they didn’t feel they could continue.

The client had other ideas. “After discussing the issue with our client, they decided to continue to work with us, holding while we got Lead-Safe Renovator Certified. We took the course and passed!” Now many of the procedures they would have to do – window removal, paint scraping, remodeling – could be done correctly, according to government guidelines. “We safely proceeded with lead paint removal process including wet scraping, donning full PPE for safety, and protecting the ground and air with plastic. We had to tear down each day and throw away all plastic with the lead paint enclosed, remove and toss any PPE worn and don new PPE daily.” Not what they signed up for, for sure!

Next, it was time to encapsulate, but this created its own set of difficulties. “The stucco on the home is, simply put, mud slapped onto the upper portion of the house. It had never been painted before,” said [name here]. “We cleaned the stucco as best we could, however, the black buildup was there to stay. We applied a great masonry primer to seal it up, then finished the stucco with a light-colored paint so as not take away from the details of the trim and other architectural features of the home. We are certainly excited to see this beauty restored.”

The team is proud of its contribution to maintaining this historic structure.

Once certified, the job continued with lead-safe practices.
