Top of the morning to you!
Exterior painting in high winds and high altitude
The home itself had plenty of windows so the family could enjoy the view. |
When you have to get to work by daybreak in an Alaskan summer, you’re talking early. The sun can be high and mighty by 4:30 a.m., then round about 11 PM it starts to trickle away – but Campbell painting needed all the light it could get for this exterior job. “This house is on top of the Chugach Mountains overlooking the Turnagain Arm and the Kenai Mountains,” said Ben Campbell, owner of Campbell Painting. “The wind can get to over 100 miles per hour, and it took twenty to thirty minutes to drive to the jobsite.” An early start helped beat the wind, and 20-hour days let them work in all the painting they could handle.
The mountain views were amazing … dare we say distracting? Along with that, the local wildlife would occasionally come by to assess the paint job. Battling the wind and the altitude, the crew took about a week to hand brush the exterior of this 5,000 square foot home – obviously spraying was out of the question.
Campbell is proud of this accomplishment – along with braving the difficulties, the scope of the work breaks new ground for this decade-old company. “This was the largest residential job we have ever done in over 10 years of business at Campbell Painting and Drywall,” he said.
