Massive project kicks off newly opened water park

Talk about a big job! Cherry Coatings was put to the test at the country’s largest indoor water park, the 200-acre Kalahari Resort which opened in Round Rock, Texas (near Austin) last November. Not only was it huge, but it gave the company the opportunity to try and ply its trade on many types of spaces and surfaces. “The indoor theme park includes an indoor zip-line, laser tag, mini-golf, games, a piano bar, full spa, and retail space,” said company VP Rocky Cherry. “The convention center includes 16 meeting rooms, 50,000 square feet of outdoor event space, and two ballrooms, one 40,000 square feet and the other 27,000.” Add to that 1,950 hotel rooms to house the guests.

On this project, getting the correct product to the correct place at the correct time was as challenging as putting it on the walls. “One major obstacle was proactively placing an order of 10,000 gallons of wall paint to the distributor, early during construction, to accommodate the logistics of loading paint and supplies onto each hotel floor before the buck hoist came down,” Cherry recalled.

In order to protect surfaces from overspray, they hung huge tarps throughout the building. They tried to spray exteriors when the wind was quiet, but this is Texas, so good luck with that, so they made changes to compensate. “We tried to use smaller tips to allow for more control, and we reduced the product slightly to help a little with the dryfall,” said Cherry. They also had to find products that would live up to a 10-year warranty. For that they worked with their Sherwin-Williams rep to coordinate mockups and third-party testing.

The team enjoyed working with the general contractor Hensel Phelps to bring this unique entertainment park to life and consider it one of the company’s greatest accomplishments.
