Built for Silence
Renovating an old movie house

The ceiling of the theater was designed to make patrons feel as if they were watching a movie under the stars.

Prince sang his famous song about “Uptown,” and that’s exactly where Nick Slavik and crew were headed. The Granada Theater, constructed in uptown Minneapolis near the end of the silent movie era, was on tap for a historic restoration. It wasn’t so slick as Prince described it. “There was no heat for much of the project (in winter in Minnesota), no running water, and there were major parking issues – we had to hike our gear in from surrounding residential neighborhoods,” said Slavik. Along with Slavik’s company, there were concrete cutters, electricians and plumbers working in this utility free structure.

They had to be as talented with a schedule as with a paint brush, since there were numerous changes to scope and schedule, as, Slavik notes, often happens with downtown commercial projects. But once they got to work, the team demonstrated the professionalism this company is known for nationwide.

“A team of craftspeople and artists led by Tina (two years of experience as a painter) and her apprentice Gaby (brand new to the trades) saw the entire project through,” said Slavik. “They took artistic license to work with the developers to come up with a suitable arrangement of colors for all of the 150-year-old statuary and decorative plaster. Much standard commercial painting was done for the renovation, but the star of the show is the liquid gold leaf!” gallons and gallons, and … gallons applied with artist brushes over the entire theater.

Along with that, the team worked on a bar addition and renovation to the lobby, full basement finishing including new commercial kitchen, commercial grade bathrooms and retrofit of the historic projector room.

A new bar was added as part of the renovation.
