Specialty finishes in a modern performing arts center

Just like Texas itself, this project was wide, with lots of open spaces. Cherry Coatings got the bid to paint and wallcover at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, a state-of-the-art performance space designed for students in the Arlington, Texas, Independent School District arts programs. The 97,000-square-foot facility is located in the Arlington Entertainment District, directly across from AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The facility is designed to provide the best possible experience to the young artists and their patrons.
With all that on the table, there was a lot at stake in this project. Cherry Coatings was on board to paint and also to furnish and install wallcoverings from textile company Wolf Gordon throughout the facility. This included a 1,250-seat concert hall, a 425-seat theater, classroom spaces, art and dance studios, an instrument repair center, and gallery space. This wood veneer installation is considered by the manufacturer to be the largest installation of its kind in the world — a book and end match install of over 35,000 square feet, or close to 2,200 sheets.
“The high volume of specialty finishes took intense coordination,” said Jake Manning, company VP and project leader. “The large, tall spaces required safety precautions and planning. We did shop drawings, installation diagrams, and sequencing of sheets for all specialty finishes being installed. Training crews on safety and quality wallcovering installation was crucial. We contracted specialty equipment rentals along with operators to ensure safety was in place.”
The Cherry Coatings teams worked closely with the architect (HKS, Inc.), designer, manufacturer, and the mill to install the seamless wood look. This included visits to the mill to select the exact logs they wanted to pick out for grain quality, wood veneers and design. It also took coordination with general contractor Adolfson & Peterson and sub-trades involved to ensure the quality installation was taking place.
