A lot of work went into prepping the drywall so it was ready to accept paint.

After a significant amount of prep work, the crew sprays the drywall.

What’s more fun than a visit to the dentist? Everything! That’s why Flagstaff Dentistry 4 Kids wanted to make its offices upbeat and engaging. Fortunately, finding a contractor wasn’t as hard as pulling teeth, and Brassberrys Painting and Coating of Mesa, Arizona, got the opportunity to paint the new dental digs.

No one wants an unpleasant surprise when they visit the dentist, but upon arrival, the crew ran into a few issues that they hadn’t expected. “We found that the drywall was not level 4 or 5,” said company co-owner Carole Amsberry Anderson, who heads up the organization along with Nick Brassfield. “Also, the doors and casings were to be factory prefinished, but due to shortages,we had to use MDF [medium-density fiberboard] plywood and build pocket door casings on-site.”

One of the cool things about this job was the chance to try out PPG Copper Armor; it was a first for Brassberrys, and a first for the dentist. “This is the first time the organization has used this antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial paint in any of their facilities,” said Anderson. “It’s a great product!” There was a small learning curve to it, she said, but they were glad to have a chance to try it out.

As you can see, there was some down-and-dirty doing before the kidfriendly colors went on the walls — colors like that often take a lot of coats, and what might appear on the face of it to be a simple paint job has a lot of hard work behind it, as Carole described the process. Like many jobs, the painting’s the easy part. “Mop, dust, vacuum drywall. Primed with high-build primer. Sand, dust, reprime. Cleaned jobsite and applied two or three coats, depending on base/color, to achieve a quality uniform finish. Doors and casings were also prepped, primed and coated with PPG product.”

Now it’s colorful, kid-friendly and antimicrobial. It's enough to make you leave with a smile on your face. APC
