#1 on OSHA’s Top 10 List is a Blue Blood

If you had three guesses to name OSHA’s most cited safety violation…would you guess “Fall Protection” all three times? Probably so, because its been OSHA’s #1 every year since 2011 (that’s an unlucky 13-year streak). Can you guess #2 on the list?

20 December, 2023

OSHA announced its most frequently cited workplace safety standards for fiscal year 2023, and not only was Fall Protection #1, but it also represented twice as many violations as the #2 standard.

In fact, Fall Protection has topped the ignominious Top 10 list for 13 years in a row.

Coming in second place was HazCom, followed by Ladders at #3.

“Although incredible advancements are made in safety each year, we continue to see many of the same types of violations appear on OSHA’s Top 10 list,” said Lorraine Martin, National Safety Council president and CEO. “As a safety community, we must come together to acknowledge these persistent trends and identify solutions to better protect workers.”

Here are the Top 10 most frequently cited workplace safety standards for FY 2023, which ended Sept. 30:

1.    Fall Protection (1926.501): 7,271 violations
2.    Hazard Communication (1910.1200): 3,213 violations
3.    Ladders (1926.1053): 2,978 violations
4.    Scaffolding (1926.451): 2,859 violations
5.    Powered Industrial Trucks (1910.178): 2,561 violations
