The Color of Money

Goodbye, Millenial Gray. The new hot color is Charcoal

14 March, 2024

Are you tired of customers requesting beige walls? If so, you’re in luck: there’s a new top color in town.

Recently, homeowners have been obsessed with neutral tones, including gray, beige, and the weirdly named hybrid of the two: “greige.” You may have heard of the trend of “millennial gray” on TikTok. Well, say goodbye to Gray. That’s so 2023.

The new color of choice for the discerning homeowner is … charcoal. That’s according to Zillow, the real estate company known for providing a “Zestimate” of how much a home is worth, frequently consulted by both buyers and sellers.

The findings on color trends and their effect on home sales were based on more than 4,700 recent and prospective home buyers across the country. As for the methodology, each color received a score based on buyers’ perception of the home, the likelihood of touring the home, and the price they’d be willing to pay.

“Paint is a relatively affordable and easy change, yet it has an outsized impact on a buyer’s perception of the home,” said Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s home trends expert.

Zillow’s research found that homes with charcoal gray kitchens can sell for an estimated $2,512 more than comparable homes, while a dark gray living room can jack the price by $1,755 or more.

Not all grays are created equal. Zillow found that mid-tone gray can hurt a home’s sale price when used on the front door. A cement gray front door was associated with offers estimated to be $3,365 less than a brighter or more neutral color.

Interior paint jobs are one of three improvements home sellers often make before putting their home up for bid on the market (the others being carpet cleaning and landscaping). With spring comes peak homebuying season, and considering the high interest rates that have many buyers sitting on the sidelines, you can expect customers to do anything they can to up their offers.

Behr seems to be on board with the trend, as they named Cracked Pepper as their color of the year. The hue is a soft black that conveys a sense of warmth.

Other notable trending colors according to Behr include “Spiced Mustard,” “Red Pepper,” “Seasoned Salt,” and “Chopped Dill.”

How appetizing! Just don’t eat the paint. And if you do, make sure that it’s Vegan.
